FAQ

Is nudie SurfGroms safe for my child?

nudie SurfGroms has been developed with your child’s safety as the priority. Every nudie SurfGroms Delivery Partner is licensed by, and affiliated to Surfing Australia, meaning they are required to follow our strict guidelines relating to operational quality and safety.
Every surf coach your child will meet through nudie SurfGroms is an experienced and accredited Surfing Australia instructor. Instructors are also mandated to hold a surf rescue certificate & senior first aid certificate as a minimum; and a valid ‘working with children’ card for the State they operate within.

How many surf coaches are in attendance per program?

Surfing Australia sets a safe maximum instructor/student ratio of 1:8, however many delivery centres choose to reduce these ratios further to ensure maximum enjoyment and success in the water.

What will my child learn in nudie SurfGroms?

nudie SurfGroms adopts an approach to learning that uses group-based games to not only equip your child with the skills they need to surf but also to encourage their participation by having fun. Every nudie SurfGroms lesson is designed purposefully to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
nudie SurfGroms teaches children from 5-12 years old core skills in the ocean across five incremental skill levels, as well as fundamental Ocean Awareness and Beach Safety skills such as surf survival and rescue techniques; basic first aid skills; and about varying surf conditions at the beach.

My child is not a strong swimmer, can he/she still join in?

Your child needs to be water confident to join nudie SurfGroms. It is our expectation that your child can:

  • Float unassisted
  • Submerge without fear (open eyes underwater and demonstrate breath control i.e. blow bubbles underwater)
  • Free movement – move around confidently in an ocean environment independently and in a group situation

All Level 1 activities are conducted in shallow water (waist depth) only. This allows those with a limited swimming ability to participate in the program, enabling them to develop their skills and confidence before moving up to the next skill level.

Safety

It’s a well-known fact that Australians love the beach! It’s very much a part of who we are.

By including Water Awareness & Beach Safety principles into the nudie SurfGroms programs and educating those who want to learn to surf at an early age, we can ensure every nudie SurfGrom has the skills and knowledge needed to enjoy the beach and the ocean safely for a lifetime.

Throughout the program — each of the 5 surf levels— the following skills have been incorporated:

  • Water & beach conditions
  • Surf survival
  • Basic First Aid
  • Water rescue skills

This ensures every member understands how to stay safe on the beach and in the water, and maybe even save a life of their own.

Swimming Requirements

Your child must be water confident to join nudie SurfGroms. It is our expectation that your child can:

  • Float unassisted
  • Submerge without fear (open eyes underwater and demonstrate breath control i.e. blow bubbles underwater)
  • Free movement – move around confidently in an ocean environment independently and in a group situation

Initially, all water activities are conducted in shallow water (waist depth) only. This allows those with a limited swimming ability to participate in the program, enabling them to develop their skills and confidence in the water before moving up to the next skill level.

Ocean Awareness & Beach Safety

For many years, Surfing Australia has worked closely with our younger community to educate them about the beach environment they live in. Now, with the support of the Federal Government through Sport Australia, Surfing Australia has developed a cutting edge junior development program for children across Australia that not only teaches them an exhilarating new sport, but educates them in ALL aspects of ocean awareness and beach safety, including:

Surf Conditions – details the types of waves a nudie SurfGrom may encounter; how the wind and weather impacts surf conditions; how to recognise rips and other dangerous currents in the surf; understanding surfing etiquette; and how to protect the beach environment for future generations to enjoy.

Surf Survival & Ocean Rescue Skills – details the hazards nudie SurfGroms are likely to encounter and how to minimise and deal with these hazards safely and effectively. Dealing with sun exposure and over exposure to the cold; self-rescue from the surf; identifying surfers and swimmers in difficulty and what to do; performing a basic board rescue; and understanding the different warnings and signals/flags used at the beach.

Basic First Aid – looks at the basic first aid procedures that every nudie SurfGrom should be familiar with. Basic CPR; managing marine stings and bites; understanding shock; and treatments for common surfing injuries.
